On race day there were only three Ford XB Falcons in the race driven by Murray Carter and Ray Winter, Allan Moffat/ Vern Schuppan and John Goss/ Jim Richards. The Carter Winter Ford XB Falcon GT blew its engine after 148 laps and was credited with the 19th outright, Goss/ Richards finished 31st and Moffat/ Schuppan retired after 87 laps in what was a highly controversial finish.
